Healthcare Access is a Necessity for the Undocumented Community

The following statement is in response to Gov. Jerry Brown’s May Revision of the State Budget and its effect on healthcare for immigrants. It is issued by the UndocuHealth Leaders Coalition which includes – California Immigrant Youth Justice Alliance (CIYJA), Street Level Health Project, Latino Coalition for Healthy California, ASPIRE, PH.D Dreamers, Inland Empire Immigrant Youth Collective, Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice, UPLIFT.

SACRAMENTO, CA As community organizations, we stand together to heed an extension of healthcare rights to undocumented youth under the age of 25 put forward by the California assembly. Yet, we remain steadfast in our efforts to include all undocumented Californians, especially our elder population.

It is vital to recognize that as essential members of California’s community, undocumented people of all ages have the human right to access health care. Given the current political landscape, our communities face extreme trauma impacting our physical and mental health.

In California, immigrants are a vital part of our communities and families. It is unconscionable to believe that one of the wealthiest and most diverse states in the nation is not able to provide for the health of all of its people. Our first priority should lie in the preservation and well-being of all Californians regardless of immigration status and age.

We call a commitment from the state legislature and the governor to prioritize the expansion of health coverage to all undocumented people so that we can live and thrive with dignity.

CIYJA’s Statement on the Honduran Caravan

En Español Abajo

California – We are in complete solidarity with the Viacrucis Migrante 2018, the Honduran refugee caravan making its way through Mexico seeking political asylum both in Mexico and the United States.

As displaced people, we understand the  life threatening conditions that force many to migrate away from the place they call home, in search of safety and opportunity. The U.S sponsored political repression that is happening in Honduras has forced thousands to flee. This caravan is highlighting the injustices they face on their journey to safety.

Pueblos Sin Fronteras, the group assisting the Viacrucis, is a collective of volunteers that support refugees to petition for asylum in the U.S from South and Central American countries. Their efforts are peaceful, yet the relentless and biased targeting of them by Fox News has made them a target for 45. They need your help.

Donate to Pueblo Sin Fronteras efforts now!

It is important to note the role the United States has placed both in helping facilitate the violence happening in Honduras and the violence this caravan is currently facing as they march North.

The military coup that occurred in Honduras in 2009 was initiated by soldiers trained in the United State’s School of Americas Watch based in Georgia. They are responsible for training up to 60,000 Latin American soldiers who’ve since become dictators, condemned with violating human rights, and use of torture, as a mechanism to instill fear upon the communities.

Recently, the electoral coup led by the US-backed Juan Orlando Hernández, who has created political turmoil across Honduras. With Trump’s praise and the State Department’s multi-million dollar support, Hernández has begun a crusade against leftist publications and those who wish to highlight his fraudulent election.

“The current government has abandoned us and left us to fend for ourselves without healthcare, work or education, and without basic human rights or opportunities, and without opportunities for the children of our country,” said a woman from the Caravan in a general statement on March 23 outside in Tapachula, Mexico.

Help the Caravana reach their goal of $15k to reach the border and ask for asylum

The United States involvement in the suffering of Hondurans does not end there,  they are funding Mexico’s deportation machine, which targets Central Americans fleeing the violence plaguing their homes.

We denounce the Trump administration for furthering the suffering of the folks on the caravan by militarizing the border with the National Guard, and we denounce the United States for turning their weapons against political and economic refugees.
