Tell ICE: Liberate All Detainees From Rio Consumnes Detention Center
To: Erik Bonnar, Acting Field Director of Enforcement and Removal Operations in San Francisco
The Sacramento Board of Supervisors has heard the voice of community members and moved to end its agreement with ICE to hold immigrants at the morally bankrupt Rio Consumnes Correctional Center in Elk Grove.
Now, it is urgent that ICE release all of the community members detained instead of transferring them out of state or to another detention facility when they can be fighting their removal in the company of their loved ones. The people detained have suffered through enough inhumane conditions in the detention center including: unsanitary conditions, medical neglect, lack of access to sanitary food, and harsh treatment preventing people from being able to sleep.
RCCC shutting down must come with the release of everyone held in the jail, so they can fight their cases alongside their family where they have access to legal representation.
We know that ICE’s detention centers (private and state-run) are a dangerous place for detainees. This year, immigrant deaths within detention centers are higher than they have been since 2009.
These detention centers are unprepared and unable to provide care for anyone. While we applaud the cancellation of this decrepit contract, we must advocate until all the detainees are free.
Please sign our petition to demand that ALL the detainees within the Rio Consumnes Correctional Center be released and not transferred away from their loved ones.
As a concerned California community member, I demand the immediate liberation of all the detainees being held within the Rio Consumnes Correctional Center as a result of the centers closure. I ask that Erik Bonnar, Acting Field Director of Enforcement and Removal Operations in San Francisco, ensure the liberation of all of the detainees and that these detainees remain safe in their community where they have access to legal representation.
Leadership from Sacramento Board of Supervisors have taken a strong stand against this contract, and are working to make our region safe for all immigrant families. I call upon Mr. Bonnar to do the right thing and move away from the string of abuses and vehement human rights violations that ICE has become known for. The people being held at your detention center are a part of my community and must stay here where their family, community, and legal representation is.
